YU Verify is an online service which confirms whether or not someone received a degree and/or certificate (undergraduate or graduate) from York University. It will also specify the type of degree or certificate and the year in which it was conferred. To use YU Verify, you either need some basic biographical information about the person (e.g. first and last name, day and month of birth) or their York University student number.
Notes
- Additional information sought beyond degree verification (e.g. dates of attendance, enrolment verification) must be provided via an official University transcript or letter. Transcripts or letters may be ordered online, for a fee.
- Where applicable, visit the Student Records Policy on Access to Records and Protection of Privacy.
- Certificates offered by the Division of Continuing Education, the York University English Language Institute and the Schulich Executive Education Centre cannot be verified using this service. Please contact the unit directly.
Important Information for Users of YU Verify
It is the University's policy to make information about the degrees or credentials conferred by the University and the dates of conferral routinely available. In order to protect our alumni information as much as possible, YU Verify will give users a result only if the search criteria entered matches a unique record. The service will not display a list of names which may match criteria and allow you to select.
In order to make your search more successful:
- Use the student number whenever possible as it is always unique. You may have to ask the person if they are willing to provide their student number to assist in your verification. Please note, however, that many students may not recall or have access to that number especially if a number of years have passed since graduating.
- When searching using biographical information, using the day and month of birth is much more likely to yield a unique result especially with more commonly used names.
- If the person being verified has changed their name since graduating, your search is more likely to be successful if you use their name while at York. You may have to ask the person for this information.
YU Verify uses information that must be available in our electronic database. Although our database is quite robust, there are students whose information may not be available in electronic format. Those students include but are not necessarily limited to:
- Students who graduated prior to 1982
- Students who graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School prior to 1993
- Students who received the JD degree in June 2009 (will be available online early 2010)
Although some students who fall under these categories may have had their records updated, most of their records are in hardcopy format and require a manual search by the Registrar’s Office.
Read the instructions and begin your search.
How to get a manual verification
If you do not get a matching record through your search even after refining it further, you can contact the Registrar’s Office at yuverify@yorku.ca. Manual searches may take one to two weeks or longer during peak demand.
How to Use YU Verify
Please ensure that you have read the important information for users of YU Verify to understand what information is accessible before starting your search.
When you are ready to begin your search, select the link below. You will be able to search either by student number or by biographical information.
To search by student number:
- Select the “Search by Student Number” option
- Enter the nine digit student number provided to you by the person being verified (mandatory)
- Enter the person’s surname (mandatory)
- Type the verification word in the field indicated and then begin your search
To search by biographical information:
- Select the “Search by Biographical Information” option
- Enter the person’s first name (mandatory)
- Enter the person’s surname (mandatory)
- If you are unsure of the exact spelling of a name, you may use an asterisk (*) as a “wildcard”. For example, if you know that a person’s last name begins with the letters “A” and “N” but you’re not sure which letters follow, you can enter “An*” in the field
- If a person’s surname has changed since their graduation, YU Verify will find the original name using a new surname only if the graduate has provided York with that information
- You may also enter their day and month of birth (optional)
- You may also enter their middle name (optional)
- Type the verification word in the field indicated and then begin your search
If your search is successful, the screen will display a unique record to match the information you entered. YU Verify will not provide multiple results (e.g. everyone with the name John Smith). You must include enough information in your search to prompt a unique response. This helps to protect our alumni information as much as possible.
If the service cannot find a unique match or other search challenges are encountered, you can refine your search and try again. If your search is still unsuccessful, please e-mail yuverify@yorku.ca and your verification request will be conducted internally. Manual searches may take one to two weeks or longer during peak demand.
Information for York University Alumni
It is the University's policy to make information about the degrees or credentials conferred by the University and the dates of conferral routinely available. The YU Verify service was created as an online self-service tool to allow potential employers and other interested parties such as immigration offices, for example, to verify the credentials you received at York University.
It is in your interest as a former student to be aware of the criteria used in conducting a successful search of your York credentials.
Your Student Number
Using your student number will result in a unique match and will make the search for your credentials successful. Note that your student number is confidential information and you should only provide your student number to authorized persons whom you can trust. The service will not display the student number in the search results.
If you do not remember your student number of if you prefer not to provide it, giving the searchers your day and month of birth will in most cases give them an online result. If they cannot get an online result, they can use our manual verification service by e-mailing yuverify@yorku.ca. Manual searches may take one to two weeks or longer during peak demand.
Name Changes
YU Verify will use your official name as it was upon conferral of your degree. If you have changed your name since graduating, you may either provide your former name to the person verifying your credentials or you can have our electronic records at York updated to reflect your new official name. Any requests to change your official name must be submitted to the Registar's Office on a Name Change Form (below) together with appropriate supporting documentation as outlined on the form. Please allow enough lead time to have the name change reflected.
Graduation Records
YU Verify uses information that must be available in our electronic database. Although our database is quite robust, there are alumni whose information may not be available in electronic format. Those alumni include but are not necessarily limited to:
- Students who graduated prior to 1982
- Students who graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School prior to 1993
- Students who received the JD degree in June 2009 (will be available online early 2010)
Information for these graduates will be added gradually, but in the meantime, if you must have your credentials verified by a third party, they can request a manual verification by e-mailing yuverify@yorku.ca.
