About Us

About Us

We provide individual academic accommodations for students with permanent or temporary disabilities, in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Commission’s Policy on accessible education for students with disabilities and the York University Senate policy on Academic Accommodation for Students with Disabilities.

We use the term “disability” to be consistent with the language in these policies. We cannot provide accommodations for reasons unrelated to disability.

How we use your information

We collect medical documentation and other information about your functional limitations, learning history or personal circumstances to:

  • verify your need for accommodations for academic work and
  • plan and develop the right accommodations for you.

Here are some examples of how we might share your information:

We respect your privacy and keep your information confidential. We only share your information on a need-to-know basis and per York and government guidelines and policies to allow University employees to perform their duties and offer you accommodations.

Privacy FAQ

No information about receiving accommodations or registering with us appears on your transcript.

We only share your information under exceptional circumstances, for example, when we are required by law or in emergency that could hurt someone. Otherwise we would only share it with external third parties – including your family, guardians or support team not affiliated with York - with your written consent.

The University must report Student Accessibility Services registration data to the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities so it can receive money to operate (Accessibility Fund for Students with Disabilities).

Every year we send to the Ministry a report with data on which types of accommodations students have used. We do not identify or give any information that could identify you

We also use data internally to evaluate the services we offer to our students. We focus on group trends. We do not identify anyone.

We digitize the files of all students who receive accommodations and store them on an encrypted, secure server that University Information Technology maintains.

Information collected by Student Accessibility Services is used, disclosed, retained and destroyed, after 15 years, in accordance with York’s Policy on Access to Information and Protection of Privacy and Records and Information Management Policy.

Any of us at Student Accessibility Services would be happy to speak with you. You can also email the Privacy Office.

We love hearing from you!
